Email #2: What In The World Is SEO (Part I )

Dear <firstname> ,

If you've been online for a while, you would
surely have heard of the abbreviation 'SEO'.
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization,
and is the system of getting your site ranked
high in search engines such as google.

Now SEO is split into two types of SEO: On-
site and off site, and today, we'll be covering
onsite.

With on-site SEO, you are setting up your pages
so that they are optimized to include your primary
keywords, anchor text and an internal linking
structure that allows for spiders (crawlers) to
effectively index your website and help you rank
for specific keywords.

Then, when visitors using search engines like
Google.com enter in keyword phrases searching
for specific information, your website can appear
in the search results if you have properly optimized
your site for the same keyword or keyword phrase
that was entered.

Does that mean you rush out there and spend all
your time focusing on keywords?

Not exactly. If you overdose on the keywords part,
search engines can penalize websites who over-use
keywords. What's more, there are factors other than
keywords which affect your site ranking. These include
a proper title tag, the anchor text used with incoming
links, and the layout of your webpage.

But for now, we've covered onsite SEO so we'll move
to off-site SEO.
